Albino
ball pythons are amelanistic which means their skin
does not contain dark pigments. Their skin cells can
only synthesize yellow and red pigments. Few, if any,
ball pythons have red pigments, so albino ball pythons
are yellow and white. The albino mutation is inherited
as a simple recessive trait.
Albino ball pythons are among the prettiest of all pythons.
The nice contrast of bright yellow against stark white
is stunning. There is nothing like seeing a baby albino
poking its head out of its egg!
If you are into ball pythons, this is the mutation that
you need. Albinos are one of the base colors needed
when making new morphs. Albinos can be crossed with
axanthics (animals lacking yellow) to eventually produce
an animal that is nearly all white with pink eyes –
the “snowball”. Albinos can be crossed with
striped animals to eventually produce striped albinos.
Albinos can also be bred to hypomelanistics, piebalds,
granites, and the list goes on and on... |
